PIEDMONT — A Piedmont man is dead after an attempt to evade authorities turned fatal Sunday morning.
Anderson County Sheriff’s Office officials say 34-year-old Casey Nicholas Smith died in a shootout with police at the Southerner Motor Lodge on Williamston Road at around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday.
Police began their search for Smith several days earlier when they had received reports that a white male pulled a handgun on a taxi driver in the Home Depot parking lot, 3427 Clemson Boulevard, Anderson, robbed him of money and forced him to drive him to the Highway 247 area in Greenville County on Aug. 28.
Authorities say a stolen Dodge Ram pickup was found outside the Southerner Motor Lodge, leading police to investigate further.
After knocking on a nearby door, police say two people came out of the motel and informed deputies the man they wanted (Smith) was underneath the bed inside.
Police said they asked the suspect to come outside, but after he refused, authorities said they heard gunfire.
Police say they convinced Smith to give up his weapon. Smith told authorities he was shot and when police entered the motel, Smith fired another weapon at officers, according to reports. Four deputies and two police officers fired back, according to reports, killing Smith.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office said Smith died of multiple gunshot wounds
Investigators had issued warrants for Smith’s arrest charging him with kidnapping, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Working together, Anderson County and Greenville County investigators learned that Smith, on his return trip to Anderson, committed the same act in that jurisdiction, according to reports.
Smith was also believed to be involved in the two armed robberies on Highway 24 recently.
The incident is still under investigation.
