Warriors fall in regular season finale

March 4, 2014

CENTRAL – Southern Wesleyan women’s basketball came up short in their regular season finale, falling 82-66 to Southern Poly State. The Warriors will miss the SSAC Tournament after not securing a top five seed in the SSAC East.

The Warriors (12-16, 8-12 SSAC) built an eight point lead in the first half and took a 36-32 lead into halftime but in the second half the Lady Hornets fought back with points in the paint and at the free throw line. After no ties or lead changes in the first 20 minutes, there were 11 ties and 11 lead changes in the second period.

Southern Poly (22-6, 16-4 SSAC) knocked down 19 of 23 from the free throw line in the second half and 32 of 40 in the game and scored 22 points in the paint in the second half to pull out the victory. Quentessa Bullock led all players with 23 points for Southern Poly.

A three pointer by Sarah Ogoke with 6:15 to play gave the Lady Hornets the lead for good at 64-61 and started an 11-0 run to push the lead to double-digits for the first time with 2:34 to play.

The Warriors were led by four players in double digits as Christiana Perkins and Kiara Coleman each notched 13 points. Chelsie Waters added 11 and Cayse Branyon chipped in with 10. SWU shot .414 from the floor while SPSU came in at a .397 clip. Both teams connected on four three-pointers in the game.

Southern Poly owned the glass, much like they did in the first meeting at Southern Poly, pulling in 49 rebounds to just 28 for the Warriors. The Lady Hornets came away with 20 offensive rebounds and turned that into 19 second-chance points.

The Warriors will miss the 2014 SSAC Tournament after finishing sixth in the East in their final year of play in the SSAC. This is the first time the Warriors have missed the SSAC Tournament since John Davis took over prior to the 2010-11 season. SWU will turn their attention to the NCCAA South Region Tournament hosted by Emmanuel College beginning on March 13.
