MATHCOUNTS students headed to state meet

CENTRAL — The R.C. Edwards Middle School MATHCOUNTS team won second place in the S.C. Piedmont Regional competition on Feb. 15. The R.C. Edwards team is made up of eighth-grader Connor Lehmacher, seventh-grader Jonathan Dong, and sixth-graders Jennifer Gao and John Wang. The team is coached by sixth-grade math teacher Sheila Amberg.

Lehmacher placed second overall and second in the Countdown Round. Gao placed fourth in the Countdown Round and fifth overall. Dong placed ninth, and Wang placed 15th out the 120 students that competed in the regional competition.

MATHCOUNTS is a middle school program designed to build mathematical problem-solving skills. Students compete in live “bee-style” events in all 50 states. Winning students continue to advance to the national competition each year in May. The team advances to the state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 8.
