MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference handed out their yearly awards over the weekend with Southern Wesleyan student-athletes well represented.
Lizzie Fela was named Freshman of the Year as well as being recognized on the All-Conference team and the All-Freshman team while Allison Barbee was named to the All-Division team and Sara Sweatt joined Fela on the All-Freshman team.
Fela led the SSAC in batting average (.457) and in doubles (17). The freshman from Akron, Ohio was also second in the SSAC in four offensive categories, slugging percentage (.707), hits (75), total bases (116) and on-base percentage (.508). In addition Fela hit eight home runs on the year and scored 45 runs, both ranked sixth in the SSAC. Her 47 RBI ranked fourth in the conference.
Barbee had a power surge toward the end of the season, hitting four home runs in a four game stretch and ended the season with nine round trippers which ranked third in the SSAC.
The sophomore was a constant RBI machine all year long and finished with 44, which gave SWU two in the top-5 in the league standings. She was fourth in the league in runs scored with 46. Barbee finished with a .315 average and a team-best four stolen bases.
Sweatt was one of the most consistent bats in the lineup before going down with leg injuries that limited her season to just 30 games.
Sweatt was a mainstay in center field and posted a .423 batting average with five doubles, two home runs, 22 RBI and 26 runs scored. Her .451 on-base percentage and .536 slugging percentage still ranked second on the team despite missing over 20 games.
The Warriors wrapped up the year with a 19-32 overall record and an 8-20 mark in their final year in the SSAC. SWU was knocked out of the SSAC Tournament after losing to Mobile 2-1 and Brenau 7-6 over the weekend.
