July 30, 2014

PICKENS – The brother and nephew of a man who escaped from the Pickens County Stockade were arrested July 16 and charged with harboring an escaped convict, according to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said Mitcheal Eugene Townsend and Gregory Scott Townsend, both of 440 Bakerville Road in Easley, were arrested at their home.

They were charged with helping James Christopher Townsend, 41, of 200 Crescent Hill in Pickens escape capture. Mitcheal Eugene Townsend is Townsend’s brother and Gregory Scott Townsend is his nephew.

James Christopher Townsend was in the Pickens County Stockade for failure to pay child support and was scheduled for a December 2014 release when he walked off a work detail on the facility’s grounds July 3.

He was arrested July 16 after authorities received an anonymous tip that he was at the home. The investigation showed that both men provided food and shelter and did not notify authorities.

James Christopher Townsend remains in the Pickens County Detention Center on charges of escape. His bond has been set at $10,000 surety.
