PICKENS – The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a 41-year-old man who escaped from the Pickens County Stockade on Thursday.

James Christopher Townsend is described as a 5-foot-11 white male weighing 210 pounds with close cropped black hair and hazel eyes.

He was last seen wearing a red shirt with the word INMATE on the front and back, blue jeans with a white stripe on each leg and black boots.

“Mr. Townsend has several ties to the community through family members and friends,” Sheriff Rick Clark. “I would encourage anyone that has information concerning his disappearance to notify us immediately and to not be tempted to aid or facilitate this man’s escape in any manner. I will not stand by and allow his poor judgment to place our citizens in harm’s way.”

Stockade authorities said Townsend was last seen at 2:30 p.m. Thursday performing work on the facility grounds and was discovered missing during a routine count conducted at 7 p.m.

Townsend is currently serving time for failure to pay child support. He was eligible for release in December.

Townsend had been at the Pickens County Stockade since June 2 and was not authorized to leave the site.

Townsend is not considered dangerous but the Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anyone with knowledge of his location to notify law enforcement authorities. He has an extensive criminal record and is identified as a convicted felon.

Townsend will face additional charges for escape when he is captured.
