PICKENS — Students in the Ignite Learning classes at Pickens Elementary and Ben Hagood Elementary recently took a field trip to the Greenville Downtown Airport.

After a few weeks of reading about airplanes and completing math problems containing airport language and information, these second grade students learned the ins and outs of the airport firsthand.

Employees of the Greenville Downtown Airport took the students on a tour of the maintenance hangar and the control tower. In addition, Dimitri Partafyllas, owner of Stratos Aviation flight school, even volunteered to let the students sit in one of his airplanes.

The classes finished the day with lunch at the Runway Café, where they watched airplanes fly in and out on the airstrip.
