LaGrange Police arrested four people for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after conducting a traffic stop Sunday.
According to a police report, at around 1:58 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Park Avenue for no tag light.
The report said that officers made contact with the driver, later identified as Kevin Childs, 26, of LaGrange and detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers also noticed a silver and black Smith and Wesson .40 caliber handgun sitting in the middle console, the report said.
The report said that officers asked the left rear passenger, later identified as Christopher Harrell, 26, of LaGrange to exit the vehicle so a pat down search could be performed and also asked the right rear passenger, later identified as Cabrera Laye, 20, of LaGrange to step out as well. As officers were engaging with Harrell, Laye fled the scene on foot. Officers chased down Laye toward Juniper Street. Laye disposed of his jacket as he was running, but eventually, he gave up running and officers were able to detain him.
The report said that officers retrieved Layes jacket and found two large clear plastic bags containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. Further investigation of the route that Laye ran found that he discarded a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Officers also searched the vehicle and found two more bags containing marijuana inside the glove box that totaled up to be 40 grams, as well as a digital scale and the handgun in the center console.
All four were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.Laye was additionally charged with possession of cocaine and obstruction and Childs was charged with possession of firearms during commission of certain crimes.
