A gunman who had barricaded himself inside the rest room of the Waffle House in the 4500 block of Hamilton Road this morning has been captured.

Troup County Sheriff’s deputies deployed gas into the restaurant to coax the gunman out at 8:42 a.m., according to Troup County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Stewart Smith.

Smith said deputies and negotiators on the scene tried speaking with the suspect and when it was clear he was not coming out, they deployed the gas. An Emergency Services Team and negotiators with the LaGrange Police Department also arrived on the scene for assistance.

The gunman was apparently acting strangely and locked himself in the rest room about 1:30 a.m. The manager notified authorities and the restaurant was evacuated. Officials were called to the scene at 3:10 a.m. Nobody was injured.

According to Smith, the suspect is a, white male about 36-years-old. His name was not released.

Courtney Elder, manager of a the Shell service station down the street from the Waffle House, said the suspect came into the gas station yesterday at around 11 a.m. exhibiting strange behavior. Elder said he claimed to be moving and driving a U-haul. When the staff noticed the U-haul was wrecked, they suspected it had been stolen so they called the sheriff’s office.

Elder said they banned the suspect from the premises.

According to Elder, the suspect possibly could have been on drugs as he wasn’t making sense and talking crazy.

Rosemont Elementary, located across the street from the Waffle House, locked down its school as soon as they were notified by officials. According to Tina Duckett, the lock-down is now over.
