PENDLETON — The Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum of South Carolina will hold a three-day summer camp titled “Pioneering the Upstate: A Journey through Settlement, Early Life, Domestication and Adaptation” from July 28 to July 30.


The camp activities follow South Carolina Academic Standards, are STEM oriented, and are designed for rising fourth through rising seventh grade students. Cost for the three-day camp is $70. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.


Activities the first day will include compass reading, cabin building, indigo dyeing, and an indoor scavenger hunt through the museum. Students will also participate in activities highlighting Native American life. The day will conclude with students making sorghum flour.


Day two will start with the basics of gardening: planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting. Once their garden is planted, students will learn about good bugs and bad bugs. Afternoon activities will highlight water and wildlife. Students will learn about the water cycle, the water table, wildlife in South Carolina, and animal tracks.


Camp will conclude with activities about animals, food production, and crafts. Campers will participate in presentations on alpaca, goats, and chickens. Students will also participate in activities emphasizing outdoor cooking, soap making, and reed weaving. At the end of the three day camp, campers will receive their Jr. Farmer pin and certificate.
