PICKENS – The eighth annual Pickens Women Association Azalea Festival 5K Run/Walk will be held April 19 with a start time of 8 a.m.

The course will begin at the corner of North Lewis Street and Main Street and will wrap through the side streets of downtown Pickens, around the grounds of Cannon Hospital and back to downtown, crossing over Main Street and ending at the new amphitheater.

“We are very excited to have our race return to downtown Pickens,” said Kay Rentz, chairwoman of the PWA Race.

The course is certified by U.S. Track and Field.

Participants can pre-register at www.pickensazaleafestival.org. Registration will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 18 near the Main Street Stage beside the Courthouse in downtown Pickens. Race day registration will take place between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. in front of the fountain in Legacy Square on Lewis Street.

Registration fees are $30 for runners/walkers over age 18 and $20 for those 18 years and under. The race will take place rain or shine.

“This is our biggest fundraising event,” said Rentz. “The funds generated from this race go to our annual Beverly M. Smith Scholarship which is awarded annually to an outstanding female senior who attends Pickens High School.”

Other charities PWA has contributed to throughout the year include Feed a Hungry Child in Pickens County, the Parenting Place, Meals on Wheels, Mary’s House, Gleaning House Ministries, Young Appalachian Musicians and the HOSA chapter of the Pickens County Career & Technology Center.
