LIBERTY — Tanner Chambers and Garrett Whitmire of Liberty High School have signed an athletic grant-in-aid with Spartanburg Methodist College to compete in wrestling.
These two seniors helped lead LHS to a team Region Championship and State Runner-up finish again this season.
Chambers has a career record of 116-36. He wrestled for Liberty High for six years and was a three-year starter. He was a state placer twice, including the State Champion in the 182 pound weight class this year. At the end of his senior season, he was selected to compete in the North-South All-Star match, was All-Region and was the 2014 Skyline AA Wrestler of the Year.
In addition to his high school career, he has wrestled freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments on the national level. He has been a state champion in these styles multiple times. Tanner also played football at LHS and was All-Region this season.
Whitmire wrestled for Liberty High for six years. He has a career record of 79-34, including a stellar 32-13 record his senior year. He was the Pickens County Champion in his weight class for all four years of high school. This season he was All-Region and placed fourth in the state in the 138 weight class.
“Tanner is very strong and explosive,” said Dale Burrell, Liberty High School wrestling coach. “He is dangerous to opponents because he is a diverse wrestler. He has a unique combination of strength, speed, and technique.
“Garrett is a deceptive wrestler,” he added. “He wrestles a ‘funk’ style of wrestling that most opponents have difficulty dealing with. Both Tanner and Garrett are dedicated wrestlers who work very hard to improve their skills.”
