PICKENS – Pickens residents can now kick off the calories and in as little time as 30 minutes per day.

9Round, the nation’s fastest-growing kickboxing gym franchise, opened for business on July 1 in Pickens. Located at 113 W Main St., the new gym uses an intense 30-minute workout focused on kickboxing techniques to achieve a total body workout.

“Kickboxing training is growing in popularity for good reason. It works,” said gym owner Michelle Money, who co-owns the location with her brother, Graydon Lockard. “Whether you are a beginner or advanced fitness level, our trainers will help you kick and punch your way to a healthier you. We look forward giving local residents the best workout they’ve ever had, minus the complicated machines or silly aerobic routines.”

Developed by reigning IKF Light Middleweight Kickboxing Champion of the World Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, 9Round workouts consist of nine, three-minute stations of activities that include cardio, weight training, abdominal exercises and kicks and punches on 100-pound, double-end, upper cut and speed bags.

A real boxing bell rings to begin the workout, another to warn the station is ending and a third to signal the end. Members have a 30-second active break between rounds, which means doing small workouts with bags, as well as sit-ups and push-ups.

There are no class times, trainers are always on site, and routines change daily, giving members a fresh workout every time they come in.

“Everything is total body. At one station members might do 20 front kicks and 20 push-ups in three minutes. The next day, they might do 20 hooks and 10 jump squats at that station,” Money said. “We bring these things to the average person, so they feel like a real fighter, like they’re doing something Muhammad Ali would have done.”

The 1,500-square-foot gym offers monthly memberships starting at $49 and has a yearlong program that’s $499 if paid all at once. Initial workouts are free.

Memberships include wrist wraps, boxing gloves and an online nutrition program.
