WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Southern Wesleyan stayed with Union (Tenn.) for the first 25 minutes before the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for a 79-61 win in the quarterfinals of the NCCAA National Tournament hosted by Grace College.
Union entered the tournament as the number two seed, the Warriors as the seventh and both teams will play again on Thursday. The Warriors will meet a familiar foe in Emmanuel College at 10:15 a.m. while Union takes on Azusa Pacific in the second semifinal at 5:15 p.m.
The Warriors (14-17) were down just four, 46-42, four minutes into the second half when Union started launching three’s and connecting. The Lady Bulldogs went on a tear, making six three-pointers over the next 10 minutes to push their lead out to 16, 72-56, with 4:45 to play.
Every time the Warriors started to make a push, Union answered with a three as they connected on 17 of 47 from downtown in the game including a 9 for 26 clip in the second half. Amber Rechis and Kelsey Risner each made four for Union. SWU made 7 of 15 from long range in the game as Christiana Perkins did most of the damage with four three’s in the game.
Briana Seda led the team with 15 points off the bench. Perkins added 14 and Kiara Coleman chipped in with her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. SWU shot 44 percent from the floor but just 43 percent from the free throw line. Union shot just 42 percent overall and made just four trips to the charity stripe, making two. Rechis led all scorers with 16 points.
The Warriors will meet Emmanuel for the fourth time this season, winning the last meeting last weekend in the NCCAA South Region championship. The Warriors and Lions split the regular season meetings, each team winning on the road. Tip time is set for 10:15 a.m. Thursday and will follow the day’s first game which is set to tip at 8:30 a.m.
