CENTRAL – Southern Wesleyan had 25 All-Conference winners in addition to the Men’s Field Athlete of the Year and the Men’s Freshman Track Athlete of the Year when the Southern States Athletic Conference released the end of the year men’s and women’s outdoor track & field awards on May 16.
Kiaser Pickney was named the league’s field athlete of the year after winning the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw at the SSAC Championship.
Keith Johnson won the freshman track athlete of the year award after placing second in the 400 meter dash and fifth in the 200 meter dash. He also finished ninth in the 100 meter dash.
Seven different female competitors for SWU won all-conference recognition including the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter teams of Olivia Bush, Logan Thiel, Lavornne Taylor and Jess Maggio. Maggio was also honored in the 100 meter hurdles as was Bush in the 400 meter hurdles and Taylor in the 400 meter dash.
In the field events Kayla Eison was an all-conference winner in the pole vault while Amber King was named in the long jump. Leeann Gibson was selected in the shot put and the hammer throw while Bush was named in the javelin.
On the men’s side, Jhante McMillan was named all-conference in three events, the 100 meter dash, 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles.
Kiaser Pickney was all-conference in all three of his winning events and Zack Hubbard joined him in the hammer throw. Keith Johnson was named all-conference in the 400 meter dash and Chevy Shockely was also honored in the pole vault.
The individual awards are voted on by all coaches in the conference. The top three finishers in each event at the 2014 SSAC Track & Field Championship Meet are this year’s All-Conference team members.
The Warriors will send five to the NAIA Outdoor National Championship set to begin May 22 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.
