ANDERSON — The Red Devils pulled off an impressive win for their varsity football season opener at Crescent on Friday.

Liberty (1-0) defeated Crescent (0-1) 21-14, despite a rough start that put them down by two scores near the start of the second quarter.

Crescent drew first blood with an 80-yard kickoff return for an early touchdown just minutes into the game, followed by a five-yard rushing touchdown early in the second quarter.

Things picked up for Liberty midway through the second quarter when Dylan McCall caught a 40-yard pass from Dereck Richmond for a touchdown. The extra point was no good, and after a scoreless third quarter, the score at the beginning of the fourth was 14-6 Crescent.

The last quarter of the game saw the Red Devils in full force, putting up 15 points within four minutes of game time. A 20-yard rushing touchdown followed by Logan Chapman’s successful two-point conversion tied the game at 14-14. Just minutes later, Chapman had a 20-yard rush for six followed by the extra point resulting in the final score of 21-14 Liberty.

The Red Devils catch an early bye week, but will return for their home opener against Pickens (0-1) on Sept. 5.
