A tour highlighting the traditions and customs of 19th century mourning will be held Saturday, November 3, at Ashtabula Historic Home. Because space within each tour is limited, guests are encouraged to make an advanced reservation by calling 864-646-7249. As some of the information is not suitable for children, this tour is designed for guests 16 and over. Subjects covered during the tour include the art of dying, mourning etiquette, invitations and visitation, draping the house, the stages and dress of mourning , the wake, mourning jewelry, and post mortem photography. New to this year’s tour will be the stages of mourning for men, and slave mourning traditions presented by renowned slave interpreter Miss Kitty Evans and Tyrie Rowell, slave interpreter at Brattonsville. A large collection of 19th century mourning memorabilia will also be on display. Following the mourning tour, a regular tour of the house will be given. At 12:15 PM, anyone wishing to tour the entire house may do so for $6 per adult and $2 for ages 5-10. Reservations are not needed for the regular house tour.
