GREENVIILE — An Easley man is dead after police say they shot him responding to an assault in downtown Greenville.

According to the Greenville Police Department, two officers attempted to break up an assault on North Brown Street in downtown Greenville around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

The officers say they witnessed 19-year-old Senobio Pedro Maldanado of Easley beating another man with a bat.

Officials of the Greenville Police department say that the two officers urged the Easley man to put the bat down but were subsequently charged by him with bat in hand.

“He charged the officers aggressively with the baseball bat after being repeatedly warned to put the bat down. The officer then discharged his firearm at the assailant who later succumbed to his injuries,” said Johnathan Bragg, media relations officer.

“The names of the two officers involved in the shooting are not being released at this time,” Bragg said.

Bragg declined Sunday to release the name of the man the officers say Maldanado was initially assaulting or his condition.

The investigation has now been taken over by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Bragg said.
