PICKENS—The Pickens High football team has yet to make a contest close this season.

The Blue Flame fell to Pendleton Friday night by a score of 56-14, moving its overall record to 0-2 on the season.

Pickens opened the season with a 40-7 home loss to Easley.

Things looked dim for the Blue Flame from the beginning, as Pendleton took the first play from scrimmage nearly 80 yards for a touchdown to open the game. The defensive front for Pickens had no answer for a formidable Pendleton offense, and the Blue Flame fell into a 49-0 hole at the half.

Despite the devastating first half, Pickens was able to show some life after the break.

Quarterback Mason Covey opened the third quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Antron Wakefield, moving the score to 49-7. Pendleton answered, however, scoring its final touchdown of the night in route to a dominating victory.

Pickens would earn its final touchdown with about seven minutes to go in the ball game.

Pickens will now have to shift its focus to Friday’s rivalry matchup with Liberty High. The Blue Flame took a 28-17 loss to Liberty last year in its three-win season, and Pickens will need a stronger offensive performance if it wants to contain the Red Devils, who scored 48 points on Travelers Rest to open the season on Friday night.

Pickens will travel to Liberty this Friday in search of the season’s first victory. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
