Easley High School has sat at its location off Pendleton St. since 1939, the same year that Hollywood produced “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
As students and faculty get set for a big change, Easley High School will move to its new location this year. The school, set to begin use within the 2012 school year, covers 162.85 acres at 1249 Pelzer Highway in Easley.
The campus will include all of the high school’s sports facilities, playing host to a new football stadium, basketball and volleyball coliseum, as well as a baseball diamond and other sports facilities.
Demolition has already begun on the old school, but there are few buildings that will remain.
“Certain buildings of old Easley High School were considered too historic to tear down,” said Bob Folkman, Building Program Administrator for the School District of Pickens County.
One building, in particular, holds the most historic value to the community of Easley according to Folkman. The ‘39 building is the oldest structure on the campus and will remain standing through remodeling efforts.
The old Easley High School and the ’39 building hold a historical significance beyond the citizens of Easley and the surrounding communities. The site was the prom locale of former graduate and present faculty member, Amy Moore.
Moore is the Guidance Councilor at Easley High School and is also the mother of two recent graduates. She attended Easley High School when the 39 building was all that stood on the campus.
“(It’s) a beautiful building with a beautiful façade, and although it is need of renovation, we are happy that it will remain, “said Moore.
The new Easley High School is designed to honor the look and architectural feel of the ’39 building.
The ’39 building, along with other remaining structures on the old campus will be renovated and will serve as the city’s second middle school.
The old cafeteria, gymnasium, band room, and administrative building will be demolished.
