CLEMSON — A Westminster man is charged with stealing a street sweeper and a Clemson University mail van.

Timothy Bryan Turner, 24, is charged with grand larceny, Clemson University police said.

On May 19, Clemson police responded to a call about a street sweeper stolen from the from the parking lot of the Bi-Lo on S.C. 93.

The operator of the street sweeper had left the vehicle while he surveyed the lot, police said.

A man then jumped onto the $80,000 sweeper and drove it away, police said.

On July 14, Oconee County investigators contacted Clemson police with information on the theft.

A Clemson investigator interviewed Turner — in custody on charges relating to the mail van theft.

Turner then admitted stealing the street sweeper, and led investigator to the location of the vehicle in the Starr-Iva area of Anderson County, police said.

The sweeper — which sustained some damage, including missing parts — has been returned to its owner.

The mail van was stolen from Sikes Hall on June 15 and found later than night ablaze in a field near Seneca.

The van — which contained outgoing and incoming departmental mail — was a total loss, said Clemson University Police Chief Johnson Link.

Turner is not a student or university employee.

Turner is being held at the Oconee County Law Enforcement Center. Bond has been set at $83,000.
