PICKENS COUNTY – Eric Mackey, deputy sheriff of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, was born in New Mexico, but grew up in Liberty and has always wanted to help others, he says.
“Since I was young, I have always wanted to help people and especially the people of Pickens County. As a person in law enforcement, I am able to do that,” Mackey said.
Mackey graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in early 2012 and is currently attending Tri-County Technical College to earn a degree in criminal justice.
Mackey is also a former member of the “Explorers” program.
Before the age of 21, young men and women can join the “Explorers” program which will help them prepare for a career in law enforcement.
Mackey was the 2007 “Explorer of the Year” in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
“The Explorers helped me to understand what I was getting into. I was able to ride with deputies on their shifts and get to know both the deputies and the job,” Mackey said.
Mackey expects to make law enforcement a long term career.
“My immediate goal is to become a supervisor on road patrol, and down the road, maybe something even bigger,” Mackey said.
He is data master certified and has been trained in defensive tactics.
Mackey is a married father of two.
