POWDERSVILLE — April 13, 2013 was a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning, and 4th Annual PATRIOT 5K Road Race participants gathered early to register, pick up packets, and get to the starting line. At 8 a.m., PATRIOT Road Race organizer Lisa Troup shouted, “Go!” and the 73 runners took off for a run through the high school grounds and in nearby neighborhoods.

The road race is Powdersville Middle School’s primary fundraiser, organized by the school PTSO, and sponsored by several local area businesses. Grand Patriot Sponsor Pasui Family Dentistry has provided substantial financial support for each of the four years the race has been held. Other businesses that contributed financially or with in kind services were: Bryan Ramey & Associates, SAGE Valuation, Southeastern Dock and Door, Masstar Signs, Plametto Heating and Air, State Farm (Johnny Harvin), The Pizza House in Powdersville, Exotic Nails in Powdersville, the Powdersville UPS Store, Hall’s Martial Arts Connection, and Paw Prints Animal Hospital.

Powdersville High School Junior, Joe Altieri, came in first overall, with a time of 19:11.32. Cameron Matthews, 8th grade, was the first Powdersville Middle School student to finish, and was less than a minute behind Altieri. The first female to cross the finish line was Raegan Turner, from Greenville, with a time of 23:30.50. All race results can be found online at Runningtime.info. In addition to the 5K race, there was a 1 Mile Run for people who were not ready for a full 5K, and the little children ran a one lap “Fun Run” around the high school track.

Although the race itself was the primary fundraiser, students at Powdersville Middle School participated in a pledge run the day before the race, adding more than $2,000 to the fund total. Jessica Preisig’s 6th grade homeroom had the highest participation and won a pizza party from the PTSO. All homerooms received 10% of their collection for their teachers to use for the benefit of their students. Devin Shultis, a 7th grade student, collected the most pledges and received a $50 gift certificate.

The Powdersville Middle School PTSO would like to thank everyone who made this fundraiser a success, including sponsors, community volunteers, students, teachers, and school administrators. The total amount raised was near $10,000 and the money will be used for the benefit of students through the purchase of classroom supplies, technology, and other school support.
