Dr. Carl King, associate professor of exercise science at Southern Wesleyan University, wrote an article “Change of Heart – Readjusting to life after heart disease (Heart Attack, Bypass Surgery),” which appeared in Cardiovascular Health, an independent supplement distributed nationwide in USA Today.

The article deals with ways that rehabilitation helps heart attack victims live a better quality of life and reduce the risk of recurring disease and/or symptoms. King, who joined Southern Wesleyan in July 2012, envisions the Exercise Science degree program as a clinical program that trains people to work in primary and secondary prevention programs.

Primary prevention deals with the prevention of major chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes through therapeutic lifestyle changes, such as regular, moderate exercise and proper nutrition. Secondary Prevention assists people through recovery and with the implementation of lifestyle changes to prevent the likelihood of reoccurrence. The University’s program embraces the Exercise is Medicine Initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine with the theme “On this Campus and in this Community, Exercise is Medicine.”

King received a bachelor’s degree in health science from Wake Forest University, a master’s degree in exercise science at Appalachian State and a doctorate in exercise physiology at Virginia Tech. He has worked for more than 30 years in the healthcare industry, directing programs in Preventive Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease Management, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Diabetes Management. King has worked for a number of different hospital systems, including Mission Hospital, Forsyth Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center. Prior to that, he taught at Coastal Carolina University.

King is a past-president of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and the North Carolina Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Association (NCCRA).

Southern Wesleyan University is a Christ-centered, student-focused learning community devoted to transforming lives by challenging students to be dedicated scholars and servant-leaders who impact the world for Christ.
