Pickens County teachers earn National Board Certification
by Billy Cannada
Staff Writer

PICKENS COUNTY—Seven Pickens County teachers recently claimed an honor that only 114 other teachers in the School District of Pickens County can boast.

Liberty Elementary’s Dawn Miller, Dacusville Elementary’s Heather Greer, Liberty Middle’s Jennifer Hoover, West End Elementary’s Nicole Richey, Easley High’s Brooks Fuller, Ambler Elementary’s Lindsey Hiott and Dacusville Elementary’s Valerie McCall were all given National Board Certification last week.

The additions bring the total number of national board certified teachers in the district to 121.

“We are so pleased for and proud of these teachers,” said Sharon Huff, assistant superintendent of Instructional Services. “They demonstrate a commitment to growing professionally and modeling life-long learning for our students.”

Huff said it a tough process to accomplish what these teachers have.

“In order to receive this status, they have worked hard to meet the rigorous standards set forth by NBCT,” Huff said.

Pickens County Superintendent Kelly Pew agreed.

“National Board Certification is a rigorous process,” Pew said. “It requires a teacher to demonstrate content knowledge, instructional effectiveness and self-reflection.”

Pew said she is proud of the teachers’ accomplishment.

“I am very proud of the seven teachers who recently received National Board Certification,” Pew said. “I think it demonstrates the caliber of teachers we have in the School District of Pickens County.”

In 2011-2012, three Pickens County teachers earned national board certification.

What’s worse than leaving your cellphone or keys at home? According to a recent survey by Trident, the only things worse than leaving these essentials behind are waiting in line at the DMV or having jury duty. To ensure this never happens again, a catchy song and dance titled, “Phone, Keys, Gum,” starring Comedy Central comedian Thomas Lennon and directed by David Wain of “Role Models," will help people remember what’s important.
