POWDERSVILLE – The Greenville Hospital System University Medical Group (UMG) Department of Surgery will come together and represent the largest group of surgeons in the Upstate at the Powdersville Medical Center.

The UMG will take advantage of an 11-office suite and provide consultation, pre-and post-op visits, and office procedures to people in the community.

“Currently, the surgical specialists that are in that office are Urology and General Surgery with Ear, Nose and Throat to follow in mid-summer ,” said Cindy Coffey, director of Operations for the Department of Surgery at Greenville Hospital System.

The medical center in Powdersville will have surgical representatives from three different medical specialties.

“We have two urologists, one general surgeon, and one ear, nose, and throat doctor that will be at the Powdersville Medical Center,” Coffey said.

Although no surgeries will be performed at the medical center in Powdersville, patients in the community will have the luxury of visiting someplace local for expert consultation on surgical procedures.

“The urology surgery is still being performed at Greenville Memorial Hospital, but the ear, nose, and throat, and the general surgery will go back to Baptist Easley, but that can change in the near future,” Coffey said.

Coffey said that sharing the same building with other medical services like MD360 would greatly benefit the patients.

“There is direct referral from MD360, which is the Urgent Care Center at the Powdersville Medical Center,” Coffey said. “When they see a patient that could have a urinary tract infection, or even a kidney stone, it is an easy referral over to one of the surgical specialists.”

According to Coffey, the medical center in Powdersville will provide a convenient community office for patients with a variety of health issues.

“They have a community referral office and they will not have to drive to a bigger city in order to see a board certified surgeon that can take care of everything from a small problem to a large complex surgical case, and all of that can be seen and evaluated at the medical center in Powdersville,” Coffey said.

A primary physician can refer patients to the surgical specialists at the Powdersville Medical Center.
