PICKENS COUNTY – Sgt. Brian Gibson of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is part of a family that understands the value of public service.

“My father was in law enforcement for 20 years with the Easley City Police Department,” Gibson said. “I was around it my whole life and enjoyed it. My brother is the fire chief at Anderson County, so we are both in public service because of our dad.”

Gibson is a lifelong resident of Pickens County and a 1989 graduate of Easley High School where he played football and wrestled.

Following high school, Gibson attended Greenville Technical College and earned a degree in Criminal Justice before joining the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office as a communications specialist.

After just three months in communications, Gibson moved to the detention center where he remained for three years.

Gibson graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in 1994 and was promptly promoted to sergeant.

“Being promoted to sergeant just coming out of the academy was great, and I was excited,” Gibson said. “I didn’t know where I would go from there, but I ended up in forensics three short years later and eventually made sergeant over here, and in turn, a career at Pickens County.”

Gibson was transferred to forensics in 1995 but took a pay cut and went from sergeant to an officer without a rank.

“I took the rank and pay cut from sergeant to a forensics technician because that is what I wanted to do, Gibson said. “I wanted to get involved in forensics and I knew there would be a pay cut and that it was a position without rank.”

Due to Gibson’s time of service, he was not without rank very long.

“Because of my experience, I was promoted to master deputy, and eventually, they moved me to a position of sergeant because we are in the detective division,” said Gibson.

Gibson has remained at his position of sergeant and forensics officer.

“This is what I have always wanted to do,” Gibson said. “I wanted to be involved in the forensics and crime scene aspect of this job. I’ve got a good supervisor to work for and a good group of guys to work with.”

After nearly a decade of uniformed service, Gibson decided to complete a four year degree from Clemson University, and in 2005, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Philosophy.

“My degree from Clemson means a lot,” Gibson said. “My wife is a Clemson graduate and my family are Clemson fans. It is probably one of the greatest things that I could have done for myself. I always tell my kids that no matter what they do in life; always get a good education because no one can take that away from you.”

Gibson has been trained in auto theft investigation and fire scene investigation.

Gibson is a married father of three.
