Creole Choir of Cuba comes to Brooks Center

CLEMSON — The Creole Choir of Cuba brings its passionate melodies, wild harmonies and richly textured arrangements to Clemson University’s Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Singing music they learned from grandparents and celebrating the history of their Haitian descendants, these 10 vocalists from Camagüey, Cuba, are Grammy-nominated and multiple award-winners.

The Creole Choir was founded in 1994 during the “Special Period” when the Cuban economy collapsed following the end of the Soviet Union and its support of Cuba’s revolutionary government. During this difficult time of sharply reduced resources, members of the Professional Choir of Camagüey decided to reforge the resistance songs and laments of their forefathers.

The program includes pieces that tell stories from being lost in a storm at sea and a gossip being rejected from the neighborhood to times of freedom and young love.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available for purchase online at www.clemson.edu/Brooks and through the box office at 864-656-7787 from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
