Columbia, SC - PalmettoPride, the state's anti-litter and beautification organization, announces Pickens County Pride Week litter blitz in partnership with Pickens County Beautification and Environmental Advisory Committee. The mission of Pride Week is to engage individuals to take a greater responsibility for their communities and help maintain a litter-free environment.
From October 20 - 27, 2007, residents are encouraged to get out and clean up their streets, local parks, favorite waterways and more. Cleanup activities can be fun ways for people to come together, get to know each other and take care of their favorite local areas. Trash bags, safety vests and work gloves will be provided to all volunteers to help out with the cleanups.
There are several challenges to encourage groups to participate. Municipalities will compete in two categories based on size. Winners in each group will receive a $1,000 beautification grant. Neighborhoods will compete to receive a $500 beautification grant that must be used in a public space. College clubs will compete for a $500 prize. Elementary schools can compete in an aluminum can drive for a first-place prize of $250. Middle and high schools clubs can compete in a cleanup challenge for a $250 first-place prize.
"The idea behind Pride Week is to connect the individual with his or her community. We want people to take responsibility to maintain a clean and healthy neighborhood. We want to help establish relationships with volunteers and the community improvement organizations such as Keep America Beautiful and local governments," said Jennifer Fisher, Marketing Coordinator for PalmettoPride.
PalmettoPride has coordinated 11 Pride Week blitzes since launching the program in 2004. In those blitzes, 25,398 people have collected 763,640 pounds of trash from their neighborhoods, waterways and parks.
