PICKENS - While many people enjoyed the last day of a three-day weekend Monday, local veterans organizations, members of the Pickens County delegation and residents turned out to honor those who served, those who gave their lives and those who are serving still.
Members of the American Legion, the Fleet Reserve Association and the Knights of Columbus held a special Memorial Day service ceremony afternoon at Sunrise Cemetery.
"This small gathering represents our commitment to never forget ...just how fortunate we are to live where we are, because of all those who have given of themselves on our behalf," said Sen. Larry Martin.
"What does freedom mean to me? What does freedom mean to you?" Rep. Davey Hiott asked the crowd.
Hiott spoke on what freedom means to him: faithful, respect, energy, emotion, determination, organization and memories.
"Every single one of us is thinking about somebody who's either gone before us or is over there now fighting for us," Hiott said.
Phillipe Cournoyer, American Legion District 6 Commander, presented flags in honor to some of the veterans present at the special ceremony.
Hiott and Martin presented a special flag that flew over the State House on behalf to Mary Whitaker, in honor of her late husband, retired Army Staff Sgt. James E. Whitaker.
