EASLEY - An Easley man died of natural causes Friday moments before the vehicle he was driving ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Carl Thomas Evatt, of 1487 Old Easley Highway, was traveling east on Saluda Dam Road, near Fuller Road, when the 2003 Chevrolet truck he was driving crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the roadway, said Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles, with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The vehicle then went down an embankment and collided with a tree, Hiles said.

The accident happened at about 1:45 p.m., Hiles said.

According to Pickens County Deputy Coroner Kandy Kelley, Evatt died of natural causes moments before the traffic accident.

Evatt, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

Linda Evatt, the victim's wife and a passenger in the vehicle, was not injured.
