PICKENS - Members of the American Legion 151 believe in reaching out and helping others in the community.
"If you go through life all for yourself, what do you get? Nothing," said Post Commander Monroe Revis. "Reach out and help others."
Post officials donated $500 to Pickens County Meals on Wheels last week.
"This is something we try to do every year," said Adjutant Fred Parks, adding the Post hopes to make another donation in the coming months.
The donation comes at the right time, as Meals on Wheels continues to grow, said PC MOW Executive Director Meg Benko.
"We've added over 80 people to our routes this year so far," Benko said. "This donation will help us absorb that cost. We really appreciate this very much."
The program has not only seen new meal recipients, but retained current recipients, Benko said.
"We're keeping our numbers up," she said. "We've seen a 24 percent increase in the number of meals served this year as compared to last year."
The generosity of organizations like Post 151 is necessary to the program, which primarily depends on donations.
"Every dollar helps," Benko said. "We hope the community will continue to support us."
American Legion Post 151 serves the Central/Norris area, Parks said.
The post currently serves around 100 members, with around 18 members in the auxiliary, he said.
The post's executive meeting is held 7:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month, and membership meetings are held at 7 p.m. the last Tuesday of the month.
"We serve a meal at 7 p.m. and then the meeting starts right around 8 p.m.," Parks said.
The post also hosts a breakfast first Sunday of the month.
