PICKENS COUNTY — Preparations for the new school year are moving forward in the School District of Pickens County.

The district’s 26 schools – including five new schools -- are preparing to open their doors for registration and Meet the Teacher events.

According to Building Program Administrator Bob Folkman, Chastain Road Elementary, Dacusville Elementary, Liberty High, Pickens County Career & Technology Center and Pickens High School are all on schedule to open to students on Tuesday, September 6.

“We open five beautiful, state-of-the art schools in September, making this one of the most exciting and memorable years in our history when,” said Dr. Henry Hunt, superintendent.

“We are well on our way to providing every Pickens County student with facilities that offer equal instructional opportunities and learning environments. Taxpayers have invested in safe, secure facilities that promote the highest standards in teaching and learning, and I believe they will be very proud of their investment. I also believe, as many community leaders do, that these educational facilities will strengthen the recruitment of business and industry to Pickens County.”

Important information needed for the start of school is outlined below.

Back-to-school information and the student/parent handbook with additional details are available on the district website at www.pickens.k12.sc.us.

Proof of Residence

Students must reside in Pickens County with their parent or legal guardian in order to be eligible for enrollment in the School District of Pickens County.

To ensure that students are eligible for enrollment, the district requires the parent/guardian to furnish proof of residence in Pickens County (1) upon initial enrollment at any school; (2) when a student moves from elementary to middle school; and (3) when a student moves from middle school to

high school.

In addition, a principal may require that the parent(s)/guardian(s) provide proof to verify the location of their residence at any time.

Documents, which may be used for this purpose, are as follows:

• a copy of the parent’s/guardian’s current monthly utility bill (electricity, gas, water, etc.) showing the correct billing name and service address; or

• a copy of the parent’s/guardian’s current cable television or satellite service bill, as long as it shows the service address and billing address.

Landline telephone bills, cellular telephone bills and pager bills are NOT accepted as proof of residence because those bills do not show a service address.

School Fees

Instructional fees are not be charged; however, each student in grades 9-12 will pay a class fee of $5.00 to be used for class activities such as homecoming, prom, senior activities, and graduation expenses.

Additionally, fees are necessary for some courses or optional special activities such as school pictures, yearbooks, newspapers, and some career center courses.

Free and Reduced Price Meals

Qualifying students receive free and reduced price meals under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program.

Families can complete the required application online, allowing them to receive benefits faster if they are eligible. Families may apply anytime after July 1 by visiting our Student Nutrition Services website at http://www.sdpcnutrition.com.

In addition, staff members will be available at Meet the Teacher and registration events to help with online applications. Families must bring the following: (1) family case number if receiving food stamps; (2) payroll check stub to provide gross income; (3) Social Security number of adult signer. Paper applications will also be available.

Only one completed application listing all family members is needed to determine the status for all students in the family. Applicants will be notified in writing concerning their children’s eligibility.

Immunization Requirements

According to South Carolina state law, every student must present a valid South Carolina Certificate of Immunization showing the minimum immunization requirements when initially enrolling. If the student is entering from another South Carolina school, he/she must submit an immunization record at registration. Students from out-of-state have thirty (30) days to comply. Failure to comply will result in disenrollment.
