School board member stands alone

In response to Mr. Gibson's February 4 letter, Mr. Gibson, I agree with you that Alex Saitta's approach is not to get consensus among school board members. Alex has a history of standing alone.

I disagree with you your assumption that he seized an opportunity to "jab his fellow Board Members." Alex presented "facts" the voting recordings of all board members including himself, I'm not sure why this is troubling to you.

I disagreed with D'Andrea's tax and spend leadership. She along with most board members already had their minds made up in favor of the "Greenville Plan" with little regard to public outcry against it.

I'm glad D'Andrea made the right choice in resigning. It's a pity board members didn't make the right choice in allowing her decision to become effective immediately, instead of two months later costing the taxpayer, here again Alex, stood alone.

It'll be a greater pity when the sleeping giant awakens. "Our children's children" will have to learn they have been saddled with millions of dollars by school board members not to mention the stimulus package they will have to pay back. We need more fiscally conservative people like Alex and less with an elitist’s mentality.

Let's take things one at a time. First, referencing the headline story from a few weeks ago, Mr. Saitta voted with the pack (all 6 area seats) to not follow the law. Until our school board is willing to follow the law...why should the students? It is no wonder we have the problems we do.

Second, the money Dr. D'Andrea borrowed has a rate of 2% on it...when we started it was in an account making about 4%! For those Wall Street types who don't know any better and those that support them, that's called profit. I was unaware that profit was called "tax and spend" as someone has called it.

Third, there were many changes under Dr. D'Andrea in the area of legal compliance. She attempted to force local schools to be properly trained in 504 law (which protects all students). If she had the support of people on the school board our principals and teachers might have all been properly trained. As it stands now, the US Dept of Ed reported in it's findings that "it never occured to 'him'" to follow the law refering to an assistant principal!

To bad people let politics get in the way of saving money, making money and protecting education. Maybe we can correct some of that this election year.

I don't know truthseeker, Lisa sounds pretty dead-on to me. The way I see it, D'Andrea didn't raise the bar. She took the bar and beat us with it. She is a perfect example of someone who doesn't give a rip about the education of our children. Alex Saitta stands up in this County and tries to finish what he starts, not racking up a debt then bailing out for a better offer in Anderson County (or whatever the reason was for her leaving...hmmm).....What a saint, yeah D'Andrea really cared, right. As for the "Good ole boys" whacking away at progress. Well what you call "whacking away at" Most of us call sound, conservative responsibility. And By-the-way, we already have a "certain amount of taxes paid and spent on education". What gives you or D'Andrea or anyone else the right to overide the voice of the community just because the current "certain amount" isn't enough to get the goodies you want?

15 years from now the Education system in Pickens county will not have improved one bit because money spent doesn't equal success. But our kids will have some snazzy buildings to fail in.

Lisa - Unfortunately you do not know what you think you know.

Dr. D'Andrea was not a tax and spend leader. She was given the task of raising the educational bar for Pickens County. For too long, this School System has been controlled by a group of "good ole boys' who have wanted to maintain a political power base using the school district board, and have listened to people who rail against taxes in general. You can't have it both ways - there must be a certain amount of taxes paid and spent on education if it is to succeed.

The previous admin, and its temporary return, is once again whacking away at the progress made and will once again have the school system in a regressive state, as it has been for years and years.

The future of our children is at stake and too many people are trying to control it. Saitta doesn't have any busy on the board, he home schools his kids and could careless about the quality of education in our county. Ever checked out his background - pretty interesting...

dedumbdra wasnt a leader at all period, she was a ruthless dictator, the only thing she raised was the tax debt which in turn will be the end of pickens count schools, She along with the board that shoved this greenville plan down the throats of the tax payers of pickens count ought to be brought to justice and punished . we the people voted down any referendum that allowed money to be spent for new schools. the lie's and manipulation not to mention the 91 million shortfall and the behind closed door meetings spell one thing corruption. Regardless of what alex may or may not be this entire tax and spend of the greenville plan was so corrupt the state legislature passed a law against it , the only error on their part was the date it went into effect. had they done the right thing instead of an open window for dedumbdra and her cronnies to act we wouldnt be in this mess. I find all of the 6 of them repulsive and disgusting for their lies and deception. and I hope it comes home to all of them 10 fold.
