EASLEY—School Board Candidates who hope to represent the Easley area next year will get a chance to debate on Sept. 25 at Easley First Wesleyan Church at 6:30 p.m.

PCVotes is sponsoring the event, and all candidates have committed to attend.

The organization held a similar debate recently for the Pickens County Sheriff’s race, and officials are hoping to have a large showing for this event as well.

“The School Board debate is for the exact same purpose,” said John Schafer with PCVotes. “The whole purpose is to get the information about the candidates out there to the voting public. It gives the candidates a chance to present themselves and their platforms, and we’re doing it in a totally unbiased manner. The whole thing is to give everyone an equal opportunity to give out their information.”

Schafer says it is important for the entire Easley community to come learn some new information about who will be occupying the seat in November.

“This isn’t just for people with kids that are in school, this is for anybody in Easley,” said Schafer. “This is important for everybody because the seat that is open is the Easley seat, and that’s the person that’s going to be directly representing the Easley population on the school board.”

Schafer says he hopes to see some parents there as well.

“It’s very important for parents to get out because this directly relates to the education their kids are going to be getting,” said Schafer. “We really expect a bigger turnout for this than we had for the Sheriff’s debate.”

With the general election drawing near, Schafer says the time to get educated about your vote is now.

“From what I’ve been hearing, this race is a little more hotly contested than the Sheriff’s race,” said Schafer. “There’s going to be a lot of interest in this one.”

PCVotes will offer a live stream of the event so that residents may watch from home on their computers

“We are going to live stream it that evening and the next day we’ll have it up on YouTube,” said Schafer. “People can visit the website at PCVotes.com and there is a link on that page that points to the live stream. It will take you directly to it.”

Those that are in attendance will help decide which questions will be asked to the candidates.

“We want a really good attendance,” said Schafer. “We packed the house at the Sheriff’s debate and we want to see that same thing again.”
