Now that is what we call leading the way.

Over the last several weeks, city and county representatives and a representative of Congressman Jeff Duncan’s office have taken to the streets to fight hunger among senior citizen hunger.

Pickens Mayor David Owens Pickens and Councilman Randy Crenshaw, District 3, delivered meals in Pickens on March 19.

Mayor Larry Bagwell of Easley visited the Meals on Wheels office to help organize meals and drinks for the day’s deliveries on March 20. Bagwell also helped distribute these items to the 10 volunteers that picked up.

Mayor Roy Stoddard of Six Mile faithfully delivers the “Six Mile A” route every Monday, but on March 21, he changed his schedule to help Meals on Wheels achieve route coverage in the Six Mile area.

Councilman Tom Ponder worked the Dacusville area. Liberty Mayor Michael Sheriff and Walker Smith of Duncan’s office got to know the system in Liberty.

To be clear probably none of these people are totally unaware of Meals on Wheels, but their willingness to take time and work shines a light on the need.

Pickens County Meals on Wheels Director Meta Bowers said that the agency’s clients count on them daily. The aging of our population is going to get greater over the next 25 years.

“Funding and volunteers are critical ingredients to the program’s success,” she said. “We cannot operate without either.”

A good time for the rest of us to start is this week end.

Pickens County Meals on Wheels announces the 4th Annual Wings and Wheels for Meals.

The event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pickens County Airport in Liberty. This event has a track record as a proven community favorite, and this year promises to be another day of fun for the entire family. Attractions will include:

Airplane and Helicopter Rides and custom car shows, food, a display of radio-controlled aircraft by the Raptors RC (radio controlled) Club; and the chance to win exciting giveaway items.

Proceeds from the event go to feed the hungry.
