Although donations are starting to pour in for the Honor Flight project in Pickens County, a more realistic look at the project has led to the tentative date for the flight being moved to Sept. 9.

“With all the details that need to be taken care of, we found it would be unrealistic for us to have everything together in time for a trip by the end of May,” said Pickens County assistant sheriff Tim Morgan, one of the organizers. “So we decided to make the tentative date Sept. 9, and to dedicate ourselves to making this trip go as smoothly as possible for our veterans.”

Honor Flight Upstate is an organization that raises funds to send World War II veterans to Washington to see the WWII Memorial. Morgan leads a group that is trying to put together a trip for Pickens County veterans.

The group had hoped to be able to make the trip in May. Summer heat in June, July and August would make the trip uncomfortable for the veterans, so the new date was set for September.

Cost for the trip is roughly $500 per person, and none of the veterans will be charged.

Therefore the group is seeking donations to cover the cost for the veterans. Many are giving funds in honor of a late World War II veteran.

Caretakers are also needed for the trip. Caretakers would have to pay their own way, and volunteer their time to tend to the veterans, many of whom need help getting around due to their advanced years.

For more information or to make a donation, contact Morgan (898-5501 or timm@co.pickens.sc.us), Richard Reece (878-1014 or richardreece@bellsouth.net), Joe Board (650-2448 or Joeb77@bellsouth.net), Carl Layman (859-4832) or Jim Ruud (859-1739).
