PICKENS — A Pickens man died from a gunshot wound just after midnight in what appeared to be an argument over money, according to police.
County authorities responded to a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. at the home of Claude Julius Burrell, 75, where they found him lying dead on the floor, according to the incident report.
A roommate, Keith Mayfield, found him cold and not breathing, the report stated.
Police later arrested another roommate, Gary Clinton Mayfield, 49, of 894 Meece Mill Road, and charged him with murder in connection with the shooting.
Gary is Keith Mayfield’s father, according to the report.
Police believe drugs and alcohol played a role in the lengthy argument that ended in Burrell’s death.
Burrell, also of 894 Meece Mill Road, died from a gunshot wound and was pronounced at his home, according to Coroner Kandy Kelley.
He was shot in the back of the head with his own .22 caliber rifle, the arrest warrant states.
An autopsy is being performed at Greenville Memorial Hospital, and the Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case, Kelley said.
