The arrests followed an investigation into escort services advertised in the phone book and on the Internet, according to deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
Wendy Ann Ayers, 36, of Liberty, was charged with prostitution and not having an escort permit or license, according to the citation.
Police contacted various escort and massage businesses on May 7 and May 8 before meeting with individuals at motels, where they were offered sexual services for money, according to Lt. Shea Smith.
They investigated a total of 19 businesses, he said.
While the Greenville investigation was going on, the Attorney General’s office had also launched an effort with sheriffs from Pickens, Anderson and Oconee counties to make Internet site craigslist.com remove all ads from its site that solicited prostitution by May 15.
The Greenville operation was conducted separately from the Attorney General’s, however, authorities said they would let Henry McMaster know about their efforts.
Others charged in the investigation include Kimberly Diane Lawhorne, 27, of Greenville; Shannon I. Carroll, 32, of Pelzer; and Willeta Winton, 43, of Greenville, according to tickets.
Police also charged Katherine Pulliam, 57, of Williamston, with loitering to engage in prostitution, according to a ticket.
All five women were released on bond.
