Pickens – Margaret Leona Ely Newman, 96, formerly of 193 Prater’s Creek Road, Pickens, widow of Robert Edward Newman, died Friday May 15, 2009 in Florida.
Mrs. Newman was born in Detroit, MI a daughter of the late Burton Dunn and Nettie L. Fickle Ely. She was a homemaker and retired from J. L. Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit, MI as a sales clerk. She was a member of Prater’s Creek Baptist Church in Six Mile.
Survivors include 2 sons Burton James Newman (Ollie) of Pickens, Kenneth Robert Newman (Jeannie) of Milford, MI and daughter Claudia Lee Laine (Yvan) of Orlando. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Tuesday at Prater’s Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Jason Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Veterans Garden of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 PM on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests flowers be omitted and memorials be made to Prater’s Creek Baptist Church Youth Missions, 621 Prater’s Creek Road, Pickens, SC 29671.
