During Tuesday’s Six Mile Town Council meeting, council authorized Mayor John Wade to draft a letter to the Department of Transportation requesting speed limits within town limits be set at 35 miles per hour, maximum.
Councilman Tommy Garrett and Mayor John Wade said the change would only affect two highways within town limits, Hwy 137 and Norris Highway, as the town’s other roads are 35 mph or less.
Wade said that only about 200 yards of each highway would be affected by the speed limit change.
Councilwoman Wilma Burkett amended the motion, asking that Wade also request DOT set speed limits on Main Street at 25 mph.
“I think if we’re going to ask for this, we should also ask for that,” Burkett said. “If they’re want to turn us down, that’s fine, but Main Street itself should be 25.
“I agree with that,” Garrett said.
“We’re getting more and more businesses and more and more traffic, foot traffic and congestion,” Burkett said. “They need to slow down. And if you saw 25, they might actually drive 35.”
Council voted unanimously, with Councilmen David Yongue and Jeff Dennis absent, to authorize Wade to contact DOT.
