EASLEY – There’s one less unbeaten team in the Big League World Series after Louisiana defeated Pennsylvania 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

Pennsylvania took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but was unable to score after that. Louisiana chipped away with single runs in the third, fifth and seventh to take the win.

Matt Calhoun, who came in as a reliever in the second inning, pitched six innings of scoreless baseball to pick up the win for Louisiana. Pennsylvania’s Justin Cozza was credited with the loss, despite only facing one batter in the game.

Pennsylvania’s second-inning success started with Stephen Stopper reaching first on a walk. Jon Taddeo then singled, Colin Kelly walked, loading the bases. Nick Keener then singled, driving Stopper in for a run.

A balk then advanced all the runners, allowing Taddeo to score and giving the U.S. East representative a 2-0 lead.

Louisiana scored in the bottom of the third when Colby Johnson doubled, then was driven in by a single by Landon Williams.

The U.S. Southwest representative then tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Gebhardt reached base on a walk, then Mark Threlkeld reached base on an error. Landon Williams then loaded the bases with a single. Gebhardt then scored on a fly ball to tie the game.

The game looked like it would see extra innings when Louisiana had two outs and just Colby Johnson on second base. But Landon Williams walked, and Corey Jones was hit by a pitch, and suddenly the bases were loaded. Stephen Gandy then singled, scoring Johnson from third for the winning run.

The East will now try to rebound Sunday night against the host team, S.C. District One. The U.S. Southwest, 3-0, has now clinched a spot in the semi-finals, and will face the U.S. West, 3-0, Monday night.
