EASLEY—With two winless teams facing each other on the final day of pool play, something had to give.

Illinois 8-6 to Pennsylvania, 5-1 to Louisiana and 4-1 to California. Still the team representing the U.S. Central came into the game with more to show than Florida, the U.S. Southeast representative.

Florida still had not scored a run in BLWS play, despite averaging six runs a game in the Southeastern Regional.

Florida scored against Illinois, but just not enough, falling 5-4.

Florida finished the 2009 BLWS with a 0-4 record. Illinois improved to 1-3.

Illinois took the lead in the top of the third inning. T.J. Bujanski singled, and Jim Mallek came in to pinch-run for Bujanski. Mallek reached second base on a single hit by Mark Kasper, then scored on a single hit by Tommy Lally. Kasper scored on a single hit by Jay Modelski, Lally scored on a single hit by Mike Goshorn.

Illinois added a run in the top of the fourth. Chris Cascareno singled, and Jim Mallek came in to pinch run for him. Mallek stole second and reached third on a throwing error. Mallek scored on Michael Spalla’s single.

Florida finally scored its first runs of the BLWS in the fifth inning.

Jared Ward doubled, then moved to third base on Joshua Tomlinson’s single. Ward scored on a sacrifice fly. Colton Rudd then hit a two-run homer that made the score Illinois 4, Florida 3.

In the top of the seventh, Zach Wiseman reached base for Illinois via walk. He stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Wiseman scored on a single by Jay Modelski.

Florida trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh and needed two runs to force extra innings. But they fell one run short.

Brandon Overstreet reached base on an error. Cory Shaver walked. Overstreet was thrown out at second base, but Shaver stole the base, keeping a runner in scoring position for Florida. Shaver advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out, but the U.S. Southeast representatives were not able to score another run, and the game ended with a 5-4 win for Illinois.
