PICKENS COUNTY — Election Day isn’t until November, but now’s the time for anyone wanting to run for several municipal offices throughout the county to sign up

Filing for municipal elections in Easley, Six Mile, Liberty, Pickens and Norris opened Aug. 18 at noon and will end Sept. 1 at noon, according to county election officials.

Candidates must sign up at the appropriate city hall, and filing fees vary from town to town, said Stacy Fowler with the Pickens County Registration & Elections Commission.

Seats up for grabs in Pickens include those currently held by Jason Cassell, Connie Bowers and Joe Durham. The filing fee for Pickens is $50.

In Easley, three city council seats, Wards 2, 4 and 6 will be re-filled in November, as well as the office of one Combined Utilities commissioner.

Currently, Libby Dodson holds the Ward 2 seat, Kim Valentin, the Ward 4 seat and David Watson the Ward 6 seat. The Combined Utilities commission seat up for grabs is currently held by Richard Gettys.

The filing fee is 5 percent of the first year’s salary, Fowler said.

Six Mile will have two seats up for election, including those currently held by Wilma Burkett and Tom Garrett. The town is not charging a filing fee to run for those offices.

Liberty residents will be voting on three city council seats and mayor. The at-large seat is currently held by Rick Clark, the Ward 1 seat by Dwight Yates, and the Ward 2 seat by Walt McJunkin. Brian Deese is currently mayor.

Those wishing to run for the Liberty offices must pay a $25 filing fee.

Norris residents will also vote for two town council members, including the ones currently held by Danny Herron and Lawrence McClure. The fee to file is $10 for those races.

These municipal elections are non-partisan, and no party affiliation will be placed on the ballots.

The elections will take place Nov. 3 at select polling places within each municipality, and those voting for the offices must be residents of that town at least 30 days prior to election.

Anyone who wants to vote must be registered to do so no later than Saturday, Oct. 3.
