The night’s game started and ended with Pickens driving in touchdowns. James Lawson opened and Joel Rice started things off well for Pickens, as Rice nabbed a pass from Lawson in the end zone. Walhalla retaliated to the initial points with a field goal, but that ended up being as close as the two teams got to each other all night.
The second quarter seemed to be all about Jordan Freeman, the Blue Flame tailback. He ran in two touchdowns for the Flames, bringing the score to 21-3 for the first half and solidifying Pickens’ lead.
The third quarter was a rocky start for the Razorbacks, with an unsportsmanlike call on Walhalla, which gave Pickens the chance to score again. They took it all the way, where Freeman ran all the way for the third time that night, putting the Blue Flames ahead by another touchdown.
Walhalla’s Easton Smith brought his team’s first and only touchdown for the evening early in the fourth quarter. A successful extra point kick brought the score to 28-10, putting the Razorbacks closer but still off the dominating lead that the Blue Flames had been working on all night.
One player that Walhalla did not count on was Hunter Harkins, the Blue Flame freshman who seemed to walk in Freeman’s shoes in the last quarter of the game. He brought in his first touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, leaving Walhalla trailing by 25 points with four minutes left of the game.
Walhalla tried to return when they got the ball, but an interception by number 15, Seth Lamb, returned the ball to Pickens’ hands and led to Harkins’ second touchdown, made with only a minute and a half left on the clock.
A 42-10 score as the clock wound down cinched the win for the Pickens Blue Flame, and new coach Chad Seaborn was rewarded for his work by a cascade of ice water from the jug over his head with the last thirty seconds still on the clock.
“I’ve never been so happy to be cold in my life,” Seaborn said after the game. “They did a great job”
Seaborn cited a high number of turnovers as one of his only problems with the game. He did say, however, that he was very proud of his line and of Jordan Freeman.
“Jordan did a great job seeing the field,” he said. “I’m happy for the kids and all the hard work they put in.”
Pickens faces off against Liberty High School this Friday, September 4.
They are playing at home at 7:30pm.
