PICKENS COUNTY — The unofficial results of Saturday’s Veteran’s Affairs Officer election are in, and Martha Dorset has won by an overwhelming majority.

Dorset, who worked in the office under previous administrations, garnered 218 votes.

Coming in second was Pickens City Councilman Fletcher Perry who got 35 votes, followed by Doug Finney in third, with 32 votes.

A total of 390 veterans in Pickens County turned out for the race to determine who would be the next VA officer, following the resignation of Lt. Col. Rick Simmons who returned to active duty in the U.S. Army in June.

Others vying for the position were former county administrator Tom Hendricks, who got 29 votes; Tom Smith, with 26 votes; Gary Ellenburg, who got 24 votes; Gary Hullinger, who garnered 21 votes; Michael Bagwell, who got four votes; and Paul Boykin who got one.

Saturday’s election was advisory only, and before becoming VA officer, the county legislative delegation will have to appoint Dorset.

Results are unofficial.
