The news that local domestic violence victim assistance program Safe Harbor recently received federal funds allowing the agency to expand its programs and help more victims of domestic violence and their children was welcome news.
We don’t like to think about it, but the fact that Safe Harbor is experiencing growth means that domestic violence is still a big problem in this area.
But the federal funds mean that Safe Harbor can help more people begin new lives — free from violence and fear.
Too often, victims of domestic abuse choose to stay with their abusers because they don’t know where to turn or they don’t know what help is out there for them.
Some victims feel that their families and friends will reject them if they speak out about what is happening to them — so they remain silent.
That’s why the shelters that Safe Harbor operates in the Upstate are so important, and we’re glad that federal funds will be going to a place where they can do great good.
Safe Harbor also received federal funds that will allow it to operate more transitional homes.
These homes are so essential for victims of abuse — they help them understand that it is possible to begin a new life and to walk away from an abuser.
Without these homes, we shudder to think that some victims may return to a harmful situation because they believe they can’t live by themselves, or get a job, or meet their own needs.
These homes help victims begin new lives.
Here in Pickens County, local leaders from all walks of life recognized the importance of putting an end to domestic violence and giving those who unfortunately experience it in a place to turn, a place to start anew.
That’s why they banded together to create MARY’S House — another safe haven for those seeking to escape the abusers in their lives.
MARY’S House helps so many — now we can help it.
As the story on Page 9A relates, the domestic violence shelter will be holding a benefit on Nov. 14 at Glenwood Baptist Church.
If you can’t come out to the benefit next Saturday, there are still lots of ways you can help MARY’S House help others. Visit their web site at www.maryshousepickenscounty.org or call 855-1708 to find out how.
The shelters of Safe Harbor and MARY’S House are more than a roof over a head — they’re open doors to new beginnings.
