EASLEY — A high-speed chase late Sunday evening through Greenville and Pickens counties ended with two men behind bars.
Gary Jason Griffin, 33, of Pickens, and a passenger, Christopher Michael Simmons, 32, of Easley, were arrested and charged following the incident.
According to police, a Pickens County deputy started the pursuit of a red Mustang just before midnight when he tried to pull over the car, which he said swerved into oncoming traffic on Hamburg Road.
Deputy David McKenzie said the car went down Saluda Dam Road and then northbound on U.S. 25 in Greenville County, going anywhere from 80 mph to 110 mph and running several red lights, the incident report stated.
The car’s engine blew and came to a stop north of S.C. 11, before making it to the North Carolina state line, according to the report.
The driver then got out of the car and tried to run into some woods, going about 20 yards before McKenzie caught him, the report stated.
Travelers Rest authorities arrived at the scene and helped detain the passenger, according to the report.
McKenzie reported that he later found a bag of methamphetamine lying on the road behind the car.
An arrest warrant states that the drugs were found immediately after the defendants’ arrest and before normal traffic resumed in the area.
After the two men were apprehended, McKenzie said he found a large amount of cash, unidentified pills and two bags of what appeared to be marijuana on the driver, according to the incident report.
He said a search of the passenger turned up a pipe with what appeared to be marijuana residue, the report alleges.
Griffin, of 108 Reece Lane, faces one count of failure to stop for a blue light and drug trafficking of ice, crank or crack, 10 grams or more, but less than 38 grams, third or subsequent offense.
His bond was set at $25,000.
Simmons, of 904 Old Vinland School Road, was charged with simple possession of marijuana and drug trafficking of ice, crank or crack, 10 grams or more, but less than 28 grams, first offense.
His bond was set at $8,000, according to detention officials.
