NORRIS — The town of Norris is ready to play ball this spring.

Chris Vann, the town’s new Athletic Director, is excited about the opportunities that a new Recreation Department will bring to Norris.

“My goal is to have a fun and learning experience for all the players,” Vann said.

“The focus of the Recreation Department is going to be on sportsmanship, hard work and having fun.”

Town officials contacted Vann about heading up the Recreation Department around New Year’s Eve, he said.

“They wanted to start a rec again at Norris,” he said. “They said they wanted to get it up and running again, and are passionate about keeping it going this time.”

Vann has experience coaching T-ball, 8 and under coach’s pitch, 8 and under football and basketball.

“I love coaching, teaching and guiding young minds to the proper ways to be successful in sports and life,” Vann said. “I feel this opportunity with Norris is a great start.”

Vann is currently attending Southern Wesleyan University pursuing a degree in Physical Education with a minor in Athletic Coaching.

The program will start up with Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball.

“I plan to have 4 to 6 teams, depending on how many kids sign up,” Vann said.

Programs include boys and girls 8 and under tee-ball, 10 and under Coach’s Pitch baseball and softball.

The cost to play is $45, and that cost includes a hat, shirt and socks. Discounts for siblings are available.

Sign ups began Monday, and will run until Feb. 25. Applications are available at Norris Town Hall.

In the fall, Vann hopes to offer fall baseball and softball and soccer, and maybe offer flag football in the spring.

“Right now, we’re just going to focus on being a small, local community rec for baseball, and doing a little bit of soccer,” Vann said.

Vann also hopes to start up a summer adult softball league.

“I’m looking for teams that want to get into that for the summer,” he said.

Anyone interested in coaching or volunteering with the Norris Recreation Department should contact Vann at 864-986-9918.
