CLEMSON — Clemson city residents will have to wait a bit longer to find out who will fill the city council seat vacated by Elouise James.

Neither Crossie Cox or June Hay garnered enough votes in Tuesday’s special election to take the seat, so they will square off again Feb. 23 in a runoff election.

Cox received 377 votes, about 43 percent, and Hay got 362 votes, or 41 percent.

A third candidate, Jessica Robinson got 133 votes, or 15 percent.

The special election results will be certified Thursday, Feb. 9, according to officials with county Elections and Registration.

About 13 percent of the registered voters in Clemson turned out for Tuesday’s election, they said.

James resigned her seat after being suspended from council by Gov. Mark Sanford. The suspension and resignation came after she was indicted in October 2009 on charges of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, forgery and obstruction of justice.

The former council member said she is innocent of the charges.
